Clean Beauty Mythen – Was natürliche Hautpflege wirklich kann (und was nicht)

Clean Beauty Myths – What natural skincare can really do (and what it can't)

Posted by Tim Evcioglu on

"Clean," "natural," "green"—these terms are everywhere. But what do they actually mean in skincare?
At Bergamond & Birch, we focus on transparency rather than trendy vocabulary.
That's why today we're debunking the biggest clean beauty myths – and showing you what your skin really needs.

1. "Natural is always better" – Not true.

Just because an active ingredient is natural does not automatically mean that it is skin-friendly.
Poison ivy is natural. So is lemon juice – yet it can still irritate or damage the skin.

What matters is not the origin , but:

  • the wording

  • the concentration

  • compatibility

  • and the interaction with your skin barrier

💡 Truth: Effective clean beauty combines science and nature – dermatologically tested, stably formulated and precisely balanced.

2. “Clean beauty doesn’t require preservatives” – Unrealistic.

Preservatives protect products from bacteria, mold, and spoilage.
Without them, even the most "natural" product would not be safe .

The key lies not in abstinence, but in the selection of mild, well-researched preservation systems , e.g.:

  • Potassium sorbate

  • Sodium benzoate

3. “Anything that foams is bad for the skin” – False.

Foam itself is not the problem.
Only aggressive sulfates can dry out the skin barrier.

Modern, plant-based surfactants such as:

  • Coco-glucoside

  • Lauryl Glucoside

Cleanses thoroughly without irritating the skin – ideal for sensitive skin types.

4. “Essential oils are always good” – It depends.

Yes, essential oils are natural – but some can sensitize the skin, especially in high doses or with a weakened barrier.

Important:

  • clear declaration

  • low concentration

  • Tolerance tests on sensitive skin

5. “Natural skincare replaces dermatological treatments” – No.

Natural skincare can support , soothe, hydrate and protect.
However, it cannot replace medical treatments – such as retinoid therapies, medical peels or acne medications.

Clean beauty is complementary, not curative.

🌿 What high-quality natural skincare can really do

Top-quality natural cosmetics stand for:

✔️ Careful selection of raw materials (e.g. COSMOS/Ecocert)
✔️ Free from microplastics, silicones, and synthetic dyes
✔️ Vegan & cruelty-free
✔️ Effective, scientifically validated active ingredients such as:

  • Niacinamide

  • Peptides

  • Squalane

  • Hyaluronic acid
✔️ Sustainable packaging & responsible production
